October is one of the most magical months in the classroom. 🍂 Between pumpkins, costumes, and a little spooky fun, it’s the perfect time to sprinkle extra excitement into your literacy block. Two of my favorite ways to celebrate reading during Halloween are with seasonal read alouds and a Halloween Reading Passport challenge. Both resources make reading engaging, purposeful, and unforgettable!

48 Halloween Read Alouds for PreK–5th

Finding the right read alouds for October can feel overwhelming. There are so many picture books and chapter books to choose from! That’s why I put together a curated list of 48 Halloween read alouds designed specifically for PreK–5th grade classrooms.

This collection includes a mix of:

  • 🎃 Pumpkin-themed favorites for cozy autumn vibes

  • 👻 Spooky (but not too scary!) ghost stories perfect for classroom sharing

  • 🧙 Magical tales of witches, wizards, and fantasy

  • 🕷 Silly, laugh-out-loud Halloween adventures kids adore

Each title was carefully selected to spark curiosity, build comprehension, and create those special classroom memories we all love. Whether you’re looking for a quick five-minute story or a longer read aloud that leads into writing prompts, this list has you covered.

Why teachers love it: It saves planning time, ensures age-appropriate selections, and makes October read aloud time extra festive.

📚 Halloween Reading Passport (2nd–5th Grade)

Once your students are hooked on seasonal stories, take things a step further with the Halloween Reading Passport...a genre-based reading challenge that turns books into destinations!

Students “travel” to 10 spooky-fun stops, earning stamps as they complete each genre challenge:

  • 🕵️ Mystery Mansion – solve a mystery

  • 👻 Ghostly Graveyard – read a spooky story

  • 🎃 Pumpkin Patch Pavilion – realistic fiction

  • 📚 Bewitched Bookshop – fantasy

  • 🏛 Haunted History Hall – historical fiction or nonfiction

  • 💀 Creepy Comic Crypt – graphic novel or comic

  • 👹 Monster Mayhem – science fiction

  • 🧙 Witch’s Workshop – nonfiction

  • 🌫 Spooky Story Swamp – folktales or fairy tales

  • 🎭 Costume Carnival – poems, jokes, or riddles

The passport adds structure, accountability, and FUN to October reading. Students love the challenge of collecting every stamp, while teachers appreciate how it encourages kids to explore a variety of genres.

Why teachers love it: It’s flexible (independent reading, centers, homework, or school-wide challenges), easy to prep, and keeps students motivated to read all month long.

🎯 Why Pair Them Together?

When used side by side, these two resources create a powerful October literacy plan:

  1. Start with a read aloud → Hook your class with one of the 48 Halloween titles.

  2. Assign a passport challenge → Encourage students to choose books that match their next spooky “destination.”

  3. Celebrate success → Create a bulletin board of completed passports or reward students who collect all 10 stamps with a certificate, bookmark, or small prize.

This combination blends the joy of seasonal storytelling with the accountability of an independent reading challenge, making October a month where kids can’t wait to open their books.

🍂 Ready to Bring the Fun to Your Classroom?

Together, they’ll bring laughter, learning, and just the right amount of spooky fun to your classroom this fall. Because when reading feels like an adventure, every student wins. 📚✨
