I cannot remember the last time I was so profoundly moved to tears over a fish. This precious Black Seadevil Anglerfish has had me in an emotional chokehold this week, captivating my thoughts. The way it navigates the dark depths of the ocean, utilizing its bioluminescent lure to attract prey, strikes me as a metaphor for the complexities of existence and the search for connection in a vast, often isolating world.
She reminds me of a favorite character from a cherished book by a beloved author. If you haven’t yet read Kate DiCamillo’s “The Tale of Despereaux,” If you haven't read it yet, please add it to your TBR. The story may be c a children’s book, but do not let that mislead you; it is rich with profound life lessons that resonate across all ages. I have read it to all of my classes from 2nd to 4th grade, and it never fails that I weep as I read.
Without sharing too many spoilers, there is a a character called Chiaroscuro, a rat who is born in the dark dungeon yet yearns for the bright, airy light of the castle above. His journey is a powerful exploration of light and darkness, hope and despair, and the innate desire for belonging and acceptance. Chiaroscuro's struggles mirror the Black Seadevil Anglerfish, both seeking their place in a world that can be unforgiving and harsh.
What must it be like to only know darkness? You are born into it and live in the darkness for years. What made her swim for the surface? It reminds me that no dark is so powerful that it can overcome the yearning for the light. Her journey has inspired me to write a poem in her honor.
Ascent from the Abyss
Born in deepest dark,
Swimming all alone,
Night is all you know,
Through no fault of your own.
Years they pass on by,
Just try to survive,
Lure prey to their doom,
Yet barely feel alive.
Not ready to go,
Feel the end is nigh,
Go away from home,
Swimming up oh so high.
Journeying for days,
Reaching for the light,
Colors flood your eyes,
A gorgeous final sight.
Remember that no dark is so deep that you cannot find your way to the light. The journey through darkness can often feel isolating and daunting, yet it is during these times that the flicker of light becomes even more significant. We are reminded that every struggle is temporary, and every night will eventually give way to dawn. Seek out the small glimmers of positivity that can guide you, whether they come from supportive friends, uplifting experiences, or inner resilience. Always remember that the path to the light is paved with perseverance and courage, and it is in your power to pursue it with unwavering determination. When all seems hopeless, remember the journey of the Anglerfish.
